Dan Edmund's historic Miata racer
There are going to be a lot of interesting cars at the event. Here's a bit of information on one of them.
We all know how the Miata dominated Showroom Stock racing. But someone had to lead the way. Back in 1990, the SCCA required that a car be sold for a year before it was eligable for Showroom Stock. So it was 1991 before the first Miatas started to race in the series.
Dan Edmunds entered this Miata into the series, and won the third race of the year at Willow Springs of February 9th - the first road-racing victory for the Miata in North America as far as we know.
If the red hardtop in a couple of pictures looks a little odd, it's because you weren't allowed to repaint Showroom Stock cars and the hardtops were only available in red originally. After the first victory, Mazda contacted Dan and set him up with a white top to make the car look a little sleeker.
Dan set a number of new lap records for the SSC class that year, including knocking over 3 seconds off the previous fast time around Laguna Seca. His success in this car kick-started the Miata's fantastic road-racing history, even after it got bumped up to the faster SSB class.
After a short stint as a rally car (really!), the Miata sat for years. Dan is restoring it now to the condition it was in back when it racked up that historic win, and it will be making its first reappearance at our event.
